In a significant counter-insurgency breakthrough, a Myanmar-trained United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) cadre surrendered to security forces during a joint operation in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district on November 13.

Assam Rifles, in close coordination with Arunachal Pradesh Police and Assam Police, facilitated the voluntary surrender of self-styled Private Kamal Akhun alias Vikas Mohanta, aged 23, an active member of the banned outfit. The operation was conducted in Noglo village following actionable intelligence.

The mission was executed based on specific intelligence inputs from the 4th Detachment of the Army’s Eastern Command Intelligence Battalion (ECIB), corroborated by technical surveillance from the 36th Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) Electronic Warfare (EW) Company, which tracked the insurgent’s presence and movement.

Upon surrender, Akhun deposited one 7.65mm pistol, one magazine, and six live rounds of ammunition. The surrendered cadre and seized items have been handed over to Tirap Police for legal formalities and rehabilitation procedures.

“The successful outcome of the joint operation reflects the strong inter-agency coordination between Assam Rifles, Tirap Police, and Assam Police, and highlights their collective efforts to encourage insurgents to return to the mainstream,” an official statement noted.

Assam Rifles reaffirmed its dedication to regional peace, stating, “Assam Rifles remains committed to promote peace, supporting rehabilitation initiatives, and upholding its motto ‘Sentinels of the North East’ while working closely with state agencies to ensure long-lasting stability across Arunachal Pradesh.”

The development is expected to encourage other insurgents to abandon violence and return to the mainstream, as security forces continue their dual approach of robust operations combined with humane rehabilitation measures to achieve lasting peace in the region.
