In a befitting tribute to the gallant soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1962 Battle of Kepang La, the Indian Army’s Spear Corps conducted the Siang Open Mini Marathon in the picturesque village of Tuting, Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, on Saturday. The event marks the build-up to Kepang La Day, commemorated annually on November 17.Themed “Siang Mini Marathon” in honor of “Kepang La Day,” the event drew over 517 participants, including Indian Army personnel, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jawans, and local residents such as school children, women, and youth.

Participants competed across two distance categories—2 km and 7 km—running through the breathtaking landscape of the Siang Valley, displaying remarkable enthusiasm, physical fitness, and patriotic fervour.The marathon transcended its sporting nature, embodying unity, remembrance, and civil-military camaraderie. Tuting, positioned at India’s easternmost frontier, represents enduring national resilience and community solidarity. Through this event, the Indian Army reaffirmed its pledge to nurture friendship, fitness, and harmony among border communities while paying homage to the bravehearts of 1962.

“This marathon serves not just as a tribute but as a living reminder of the steadfast courage and supreme sacrifice of soldiers who defended our nation’s dignity at Kepang La,” local community members expressed, praising participants for their spirited performance.

The event culminated in a felicitation ceremony where winners from different categories were honored with medals, certificates, and cash rewards. The vibrant participation of local youth and women earned special acclaim, signifying the expanding sports and fitness culture in border areas.

“Through initiatives like the Siang Mini Marathon, we demonstrate our unwavering commitment to strengthening bonds with frontier communities and honouring our martyrs,” stated an Army official, emphasising the event’s deeper significance.

Operating under Operation Sadbhavana, the Indian Army regularly conducts diverse initiatives across Arunachal Pradesh focusing on education, healthcare, and sports development. The Siang Mini Marathon exemplifies the Army’s sustained efforts toward nation-building and promoting communal harmony.

The marathon concluded amid patriotic fervour, with spirited chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Hind” reverberating through the valley. Participants and spectators alike departed with heightened pride, unity, and deep gratitude for the heroes whose extraordinary valor continues to inspire generations in building a strong and unified nation.
