The ‘India Maritime Week, 2025’ concluded on a historic note, with Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, announcing a record-breaking ₹12 Lakh Crores in investment commitments secured through over 600 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). Hailed as a landmark achievement for the nation’s blue economy, the event solidified India’s position on the global maritime map.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Thursday, a triumphant Sonowal declared the week a “resounding success.” He stated, “This surge of 41% from GMIS 2023 underscores India’s growing leadership in sustainable port-led development and its emergence as a key driver of the global blue economy. This is a direct result of our dynamic PM Narendra Modi ji’s visionary leadership, which has transformed India’s maritime sector into a beacon of global confidence and opportunity.”

The investment portfolio is strategically diversified, with 30% earmarked for port development, 20% each for sustainability, shipping, and port-led industrialisation, and 10% for trade partnerships. High-value agreements include a ₹47,000 crore Green Ammonia Plant at V.O. Chidambaranar Port and multiple projects at Paradip Port for Green Hydrogen and E-Methanol, collectively worth over ₹80,500 crore.

The third day of the summit witnessed a major policy push as Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated a suite of transformative maritime initiatives to the nation, aligning with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV), 2047. The announcements included a strategic ₹1 Lakh Crore investment by the Shipping Corporation of India to expand its fleet to 216 vessels by 2047.

In a significant boost to indigenous manufacturing, Oil and Gas PSUs launched 59 shipbuilding orders worth ₹47,800 crore. Sustainability was a central theme, with the launch of the Green Tug Programme, aiming to deploy 100 eco-friendly tugs by 2040 with an investment of ₹12,000 crore. The Dredging Corporation of India also announced plans to modernise its fleet with 11 new dredgers.

“At the India Maritime Week 2025, these initiatives reflect our dynamic Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a green, self-reliant, and globally competitive maritime ecosystem, steering India toward Viksit Bharat 2047,” added Sonowal.

The event’s stature was amplified by the ‘Global Maritime CEO Forum,’ which brought together industry titans from companies like Maersk, DP World, and MSC. PM Modi addressed the conclave, urging international partners to collaborate on building a cleaner and more resilient blue economy. The forum served as a dynamic platform for dialogue on sustainable growth and green shipping innovation.

The scale of international collaboration was unprecedented, with participation from over 85 countries, including ministerial delegations from 11 nations such as Norway, the Netherlands, and Singapore. Their presence underscored the global consensus on India’s pivotal role in shaping the future of maritime trade and sustainability.

With the theme “Uniting Oceans, One Maritime Vision,” India Maritime Week 2025, attended by over 100,000 delegates, has successfully translated national ambition into tangible global partnerships, setting a definitive course for India’s journey to becoming a premier maritime powerhouse.
