Dibrugarh University’s Rang ghar auditorium transformed into a space for inclusive dialogue on Thursday as two leading organisations came together to screen the groundbreaking Assamese film “Fireflies – Jonaki Porua,” marking a crucial milestone in the lead-up to Dibrugarh Pride 2025.

Sotiyona: A Queer Collective, Dibrugarh Pride Committee, and Dibrugarh University Research Scholar Association (DURSA) jointly organised the screening, which attracted a diverse audience comprising queer individuals, allies, students, educators, and artists, all united in their commitment to fostering gender inclusivity.

The event featured Milin Dutta—producer of the film, celebrated trans activist, environmentalist, and founder of Anaajoree—as chief guest. Dutta delivered an impassioned appeal for authentic inclusion. “Equality is not just about tolerance; it’s about respect and recognition,” Dutta emphasised, challenging attendees to transcend token gestures and embrace meaningful change.

“Fireflies – Jonaki Porua,” which premiered on October 6, 2019, carries immense cultural significance as the first Assamese film to tackle queer themes. Produced by Anaajoree, the film has achieved considerable recognition, securing nominations at multiple national and international film festivals and claiming the Best Feature Film Award at the 8th Assam State Film Awards for 2019.

Research scholar Pinky Biswas from Dibrugarh University’s Department of Political Science highlighted stark realities facing the transgender community. “98% of transgender individuals face bias from family and society, 52% at workplaces, and 62% in educational institutions,” Biswas revealed, referencing a World Economic Organization report that suggests gender-based empowerment might require another 130 years to achieve at current rates.

However, Biswas maintained an optimistic outlook, announcing that the fourth annual Dibrugarh Pride March—first launched in 2022—will proceed on November 1. The march champions the creation of safe, inclusive spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community across every sector of society.

This screening initiative forms part of broader mobilisation efforts to raise awareness about Dibrugarh District’s upcoming Pride Parades while encouraging constructive conversations about gender diversity and inclusion throughout the region.
