Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia launched a fierce condemnation of the Assam government, citing a catastrophic failure to protect communities from the relentless erosion of the Brahmaputra River in the Maijan area of Dibrugarh.
Speaking at a press briefing at Rajiv Bhawan in Dibrugarh on Friday, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly expressed serious concern over the escalating situation, which has seen vast tracts of land and numerous homes disappear into the river. He stated that the government’s inaction has left families devastated and without recourse.

“The Brahmaputra has been consuming our land metre by metre, and with it, the homes and livelihoods of our people. The complete absence of any effective counter-measures from the state government is nothing short of a dereliction of duty,” Saikia said.
He also lambasted the ruling administration for its handling of chronic issues such as urban waterlogging, which he said plunges Dibrugarh into chaos annually.
“When the rains come, our towns submerge, and yet we see no lasting solutions, only empty promises from the Chief Minister’s office,” he said.

The Congress leader further alleged that an “administrative vacuum,” caused by a deliberate stalling of recruitment in vital sectors like health and education, is crippling public services. He concluded with a warning, urging a return to inclusive politics.
“Our social fabric is being tested. We must choose a path of unity and competent governance, for the very future of Assam is at stake,” Saikia said.
