Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh undertook an extensive security evaluation in Tinsukia district on Wednesday, reviewing law and order conditions and cross-border security protocols following a recent militant strike on an Indian Army facility.
The senior officer’s inspection follows Director General of Police Harmeet Singh’s district tour on October 25, after the proscribed militant organisation Ulfa-Independent launched an assault on the 2nd Grenadiers camp at Kakopathar recently. The attack left three Army personnel with minor injuries, triggering enhanced security vigilance across the border district.
During his visit, IGP Singh was briefed extensively by Tinsukia Senior Superintendent of Police Abhijit Gurav and other senior officers on the district’s security apparatus. Deliberations concentrated primarily on the strategic security complexities facing Tinsukia district, which shares its boundary with Arunachal Pradesh.
The police chief also journeyed to Sadiya police district in Tinsukia, conducting detailed discussions with Sadiya SSP Jagadish Das and other senior officials. These consultations focused on the ongoing threat posed by Ulfa-Independent and deploying preventive security strategies to counter militant operations. Singh emphasised the critical need for smooth inter-agency collaboration in addressing security challenges effectively.
A major issue discussed during the assessment was the exposed border stretches between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, which militant groups such as the United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (Ulfa-I) and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) are reportedly exploiting as passage routes. These corridors allegedly facilitate militant transit to their bases situated beyond the international frontier in Myanmar.
“Our focus remains on proactive measures to prevent militant activities and secure the border areas effectively. Coordination between agencies is paramount in tackling these threats,” Singh said.
The IGP carried out a meticulous evaluation of the prevailing law and order scenario, cross-border security frameworks, and examined particulars of the recent Kakopathar army camp incident. Officials explored strategies to bolster surveillance systems and improve coordination with corresponding agencies in adjacent Arunachal Pradesh.
