Dibrugarh University launched Japanese language classes on Monday for 35 students as part of the Assam Chief Minister’s Foreign Language Initiative for Global Human Talent (CM-FLIGHT) Scheme for 2025–26. The initiative, conducted in partnership with Mirai Japanese Learning Centre, aims to equip Assamese youth with skills for employment opportunities in Japan.

The collaboration follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed on September 13 between Dibrugarh University and Mirai Japanese Learning Centre.

“This collaboration with Mirai is a significant milestone for Dibrugarh University, marking a step forward in our commitment to offering world-class opportunities and education for our students,” Dibrugarh University Vice-Chancellor Prof Jiten Hazarika said.

The CM-FLIGHT Scheme represents the Assam government’s strategic effort to prepare young people for international employment through foreign language and vocational training. The pilot phase concentrates on Japan, offering language instruction and placement assistance through Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa programme.

Target sectors include construction, nursing care, hospitality, food service, healthcare, manufacturing, and food processing—all experiencing acute labour shortages in Japan.

A Mirai representative explained the programme’s comprehensive approach: “Our aim is to create a direct pathway for students, not only to learn the language but also to secure jobs in diverse sectors. Learning Japanese will provide students with a deeper understanding of Japan’s rich culture, improving cross-cultural collaboration.”

The scheme provides considerable financial support, covering major training expenses while significantly reducing participants’ contributions. Additional funding assists with relocation costs and visa processing after placement. Eligibility requirements include permanent Assam residency, age between 18 and 45 years, medical fitness, and appropriate educational qualifications.

Mirai Japanese Learning Centre offers guaranteed placement in Japanese companies, positioning graduates for well-compensated overseas positions.

The programme is expected to boost Assam’s economy through remittances, strengthen bilateral ties between India and Japan, and eventually expand to include additional countries and languages, creating broader international opportunities for the state’s workforce.
