In a deeply emotional and compassionate rescue, a Western Hoolock Gibbon, nurtured by a loving local family for 13 years, has been given a chance to return to her forest home. The operation in Balmikram Village, North Garo Hills, Meghalaya was a collaborative effort between the A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) and the Sonja Wildlife Rescue team, marking the end of one extraordinary bond and the beginning of a hopeful new chapter.

The gibbon was just an infant when the family found her alone and vulnerable in a nearby reserve forest. Driven by compassion, they took her in, raising her as their own and providing shelter and food for over a decade. Recognising that her future ultimately belonged in the wild, the family made the difficult decision to contact authorities, setting the rescue in motion.

“This was not a seizure; it was a transition made possible by a family’s incredible love and selflessness. For 13 years, they were her protectors. Their final, and hardest, act of care was to let her go so she could truly thrive. We are not just rescuing a gibbon; we are honoring a family’s profound bond,” said an AHAM spokesperson.

The gibbon, now under expert care at the Sonja Wildlife Rescue Centre, is stable and beginning a careful rehabilitation process to prepare her for life in the wild. The family, while heartbroken, finds solace in her new chance.

“This is a story that touches the heart of our community’s relationship with nature. It shows a deep, inherent respect for life. We thank the family for their immense kindness and for trusting us with her future,” said AHAM President George Prince Ch. Momin.

The Western Hoolock Gibbon is an Endangered species, and this successful rescue and planned rewilding is a significant victory for conservation, born from a family’s difficult but loving choice.
