In a vibrant celebration of regional solidarity, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh came together for the “Border Harmony Festival” at the Donyi Polo complex in Silapathar, Dhemaji district, on Saturday. The joint initiative, organised by the Dhemaji and Lower Siang district administrations and coordinated by Assam’s Border Protection and Development Department, centred on the theme “Celebrate Peace, Harmony and Cultural Unity.”

The festival attracted prominent dignitaries and officials from both states. Assam’s delegation included Border Protection & Development Minister Atul Bora, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, and Member of Parliament Pradan Baruah. Representing Arunachal Pradesh were Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor and MLA Tojir Kadu. District Commissioners, Superintendents of Police, border department officials, cultural representatives, social organisations, and local residents turned out in significant numbers.

The highlight of the festivities was the captivating cultural performances by ethnic communities from both states, who showcased traditional dances in striking traditional dress. The colourful presentations created an atmosphere of genuine celebration and joy.
Minister Atul Bora emphasised the political cooperation driving improved relations between the states. “Due to the strong political goodwill of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma and the keen interest of Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, the path to resolving border issues between the two states has been paved, and a new atmosphere of peace and harmony has been created in the border areas,” he said.

Bora elaborated on the festival’s broader aims, noting efforts to accelerate development and trade whilst promoting tourism in border regions. He highlighted the participation of various government departments and self-help groups from both states in the programme.

Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor expressed his appreciation for the cultural showcase, stating: “I was pleased to enjoy the unique traditional cultural performances presented by various artists from both states at today’s festival. The distinct traditions and cultures of both states will carry the message of harmony, and through this festival, the thread of amity between the two states will be further strengthened, positively impacting the development of various ethnic communities living in the border areas.”

The event symbolised a renewed commitment to cooperation and mutual development, with cultural troupes transcending administrative boundaries to foster genuine understanding and camaraderie.
Participants pledged to work collaboratively towards the mutual development and harmony of border areas, recognising that cultural exchange and people-to-people contact are essential for lasting peace and prosperity in the region.
