A month-long sporting extravaganza, the Sansad Khel Mahotsav, will commence in Dibrugarh on October 31, featuring competitions across 11 venues spanning six constituencies of the district.
Dibrugarh District Sports Association (DDSA) president Niranjan Saikia announced at a press conference that the national sports festival will run through December 25, 2025. “The Sansad Khel Mahotsav is being organised across Assam and other parts of India with a primary focus on promoting sports and fitness among youth,” Saikia stated.
The festival to be held at Chowkidinghee Playground in Dibrugarh and other locations of the district will feature both mainstream and traditional sports, including football, cricket, volleyball, athletics, and indigenous games such as khoko, kabaddi, pithu, and tug of war.
The competition follows a three-tier structure, with matches held at village, block/ward, and parliamentary constituency levels, designed to identify and develop local sporting talent.

Saikia explained that the event, originally scheduled for September, was postponed following the sudden passing of Zubeen Garg. “This Sansad Khel Mahotsav will provide a valuable platform for grooming budding players,” he added.
Highlighting the festival’s broader objectives, Saikia emphasised that the initiative aims to discover promising athletes at the grassroots level while fostering wider participation in both indigenous and mainstream sports. “It also seeks to instill values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance among young people—qualities essential for nation-building,” he noted.
The press conference was also attended by DDSA working president Manash Jyoti Dutta, vice president Imdad Ahmed, football secretary Ashim Hazarika, and athletics secretary Bipul Chutia.
